Parent's Guide for THE SECRET GARDEN

Are you interested in bringing your child to THE SECRET GARDEN? Here are a few things to help you make your decision. The play is based on the classic story, which is at its essence a ghost story. Young Mary Lennox is brought to the gloomy, haunted Misselthwaite Manor after her parents die in a cholera epidemic in India. With the help of her new friends and the magic of a secret garden, she helps both the house and the ghosts heal and thrive.

Questions your child might ask you include:

  • Are ghosts real?

  • Are our relatives who have passed ghosts?

  • What's cholera and why is it so dangerous?

  • What was wrong with Colin (the character who is kept in his room for health reasons)?

If your child has seen and enjoyed the HARRY POTTER movies, this will probably be very enjoyable to them.  It has similar themes of the children in the story helping the adults overcome loss and see the good in life. Feel free to reach out to the NVA staff for any additional information.
